From the recording Love Has Its Price
Lyrics
She never thought she would
Go in that place
Longing for love
Yearning for grace
She’s alone in a throng
They were wary
As they took their places in
Their sanctuary
They went
Front and center
So fine, so proud
Castigating sinners
Praising out loud
She’s in back
Away from the crowd
Eyes cast down
Head is bowed
Heavy laden
She done wrong
She ain’t worthy
Don’t belong
They were perfect
She was flawed
They went for church
She went for God
They heard the Word
Took the bread and wine
Wholly justified
To taste the divine
Through years and years
Of this Sunday union
She never partook
In their communion
They were
Front and center
So fine, so proud
Castigating sinners
Praising out loud
She’s in back
Away from the crowd
Eyes cast down
Head is bowed
Heavy laden
She done wrong
She ain’t worthy
Don’t belong
They were perfect
She was flawed
They went for church
She went for God
Nothing ever changed
Nothing ever lasts
She hoped for grace
Everybody passed
They were
Front and center
Safe and saved
In the church cemetery
In their gaudy graves
As for her
That wasn’t her lot
No fine shrine
An unmarked plot
Heavy laden
She done wrong
She wasn’t worthy
Didn’t belong
They were perfect
She was flawed
They went to church
She went to God

Track Notes
---------------------------------------
My wife was visiting a dear friend in Texas who told her the true story of a young lady who was trafficked by her mother, primarily for drug money. They attended church, the congregation knew about these terrible circumstances but.. did nothing.
Later, a neighbor came into this girl's life and rescued her. The girl said she learned "There are church people and there are God people".
The intent of this song is not to condemn all people who attend church, but to highlight the differences between "church people" and "God people". And for those of us who do attend, let's do our best to be "God people".
